Spanish Trail Running Adventures

Spanish Trail Running Adventures with Trail Events Co

We are delighted to be able to offer you the trail running adventure of a lifetime by joining us for a week (7 nights – Full board) of guided trail running on the beautiful Costa Blanca.

Based in the region of Marina Baixa in Alicante, you’ll get an opportunity to run the Iconic Mountains of Puig Campana and Sierra Bernia; including the Vertical Kilometer course. The region boasts some of the best trail running in Spain and is home the Costa Blanca Trails Race every year in late November.

Hotel Villa Morena.

Located between Puig Campana and the beautiful beaches of La Cala Finestrat and La Vila Joiosa, less than 10 minutes drive from the incredible mountain trails. Villa Morena features rooms with views of the ocean and the mountains.

We will have exclusive use of Villa Morena, we will be the only guests when we are training!

Surrounded by trees, Villa Morena is located in the town of Finestrat. It features a comfortable, stylish, country-style décor and a furnished terrace that overlooks the mountains.

Each air-conditioned room at Villa Morena is equipped with a flat-screen satellite TV and a private bathroom with shower. There is also free Wi-Fi and the suites have a hydromassage shower, as well as a balcony.

It’s a stunning location right at the foothills of the mountains, with the vertical kilometer route less then five minutes from the front door.

Their menu is something very special and top class, with a full range of local cuisine and Spanish flavours to get you ready, keep you going and refuel you in the evenings after a hard day on the trails. We may not be in the hotel for lunch, if so, the hotel will supply us with a wonderful picnic for lunch.

Trail Running Guides

Our local experienced guides who have extensive knowledge of the Mountain trails, full mountain leader qualifications, will guide you around this stunning region of Spain. Making this a fantastic opportunity for you to experience the best that trail running in Spain can offer you.

One of our favourite running routes starts at the heliport in the little town of Polop, taking in two of the most iconic mountains in the region; Monte Ponoig and Puig Campana. Ponoig or Leon Dormido (Sleeping Lion), as it is affectionately known by the locals, stands at 1182m above sea level and from the town of Polop it resembles a giant sleeping Lion. Puig Campana (Bell Peak) stands at 1408m and has the famous Vertical Kilometer course which takes you from Font del Moli at 340m to the summit over a distance of 3.8KM.

From the heliport in Polop you climb 500m through a beautiful pine forest before heading down to Coll de Pouet via a narrow trail. From Coll de Pouet you descend a technical trail to Font Del Moli, where you’re able to replenish your water from one of the many natural springs in the area, after filling your water bottles you can either head to the summit of El Puig via the challenging VK1 course or back to Coll de Pouet via a the circular route. Where we’ll head through the narrow rocky step that is Coll de Llam at 1100m, before a long descent back to Polop via el Camino de la casa de Dios (The Road to God’s House).

This is just one of the many routes we have to choose from in these spectacular mountains.

This aggressive mountainous terrain provides a real test for even the most experienced of trail runners, with gnarly paths and trails dramatically carved into the limestone rock.

These testing runs do not go without reward on the trails of the Costa Blanca. Runners and hikers are always treated to a wealth of spectacular views, breath-taking ridges, dramatic pinnacles, huge caves and jaw-dropping rock arches, making this area of Spain an absolute must-visit location for any outdoor enthusiast.

Most runs will be on mountain trials, single tracks and dirt roads. The expected elevation over the 6 days is going to be + 5000m and the expected distance over the 6 days will be +100km. The trails are very technical in sections and can be rocky; the climate in the region is good all round and we can expect temperatures between 18-24 degrees.

Our Spanish trail running week is suitable for runners that have experience running in the mountains and want to build on the skills and experience that they already have. Most of our runs will be on single tracks, dirt roads and steep rocky technical terrain that includes ascents and descents.
We will not be running on any exposed ridges but we will be moving through and over rocky steps and scree slopes. This adventure would be perfect for those runners who are training for a multi day stage racing or experience of running marathons/ ultras in areas such as Snowdonia, Dartmoor, Brecon Beacons or the Scottish Highlands. You will be running between 15km and 30km per day with a positive elevation gain of between 700m and 1500m.

Our number one objective for these trips is to provide our runners with a trail running adventure and not a race; therefore we will be running at a pace that allows us to take in the epic scenery and the incredible views. There will be plenty of time to stop for photos and food along the way.
