We have a superb location for this event, set at Holwell Down, close to the famous Hound Tor and Haytor plus the Dartmoor village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

Set in the heart of Dartmoor it means that you are straight onto the trails just the way we like it. Dartmoor in February can be a tough area to be, along with the routes taking in some tough, challenging hills and full speed decents.

As usual there are four distances on offer. All routes start and finish at the main field at Holwell Down and head off over the moors towards Hound Tor and Haytor Downs. Whilst the 12K loop around great Hound Tor and head back to the finish the rest will carry on heading towards Yarner Woods. Circling the nature reserve at Yarner Woods you then head up the river towards Becky Falls and Manaton with the half marathon rounding Great Hounder and heading back to the finish after passing the famous Jay’s Grave. The marathon and ultra runners head in the other direction; skirting around Hammeldown Tor and Kings Tor before cutting left between Shapley Tor and Kings Tor, passing the old hut circles and settlements. The marathon will head down to Challacombe Tor before heading back to Widecombe-in-the-Moor and up to the finish line. The ultra runners pass right around Challacombe Tor and into Soussons Down. Once through Soussons Down they will be heading down towards Corndon Tor, which is quite a trip. Once at Corndon Tor they make a sharp turn and start the trip back to Widecombe-in-the-Moor and then head up to the finish area at Holwell Down.

The Route

Starting and finishing at the wonderful Holwell Down in the heart of Dartmoor this is a wonderful route.
The 12k heads out from Holwell Down towards Hound Tor but before you make it to Hound Tor you head right and over Holwell Lawn towards Greator Rocks and the medieval settlement behind Hound Tor.

Passing between the medieval site and some hut circles, you head down the hill and across to Black Hill. Passing by Smallacombe Rocks and more hut circles you turn left and head across Black Hill before picking up the path that leads you down to Leighton.

From Leighton, you follow the footpaths towards Southcott and then up to Hayne Cross. Starting the trip to the finish you head from Hayne Cross towards Hayne Down, crossing Hayne Down then picking up the road for a short section taking you back to Hound Tor.

Picking up the trail at Hound Tor, you head up Hound Tor Down where you find the path you started on which leads you back to Holwell Down and the finish, where you will receive your bespoke medal and tech t-shirt, plus some well earned refreshments.

This is a stunning and very challenging half marathon route. Starting at the wonderful Holwell Down you head towards the famous Hound Tor, taking the path across Holwell Lawn at the back of Hound Tor, towards Greator Rocks and the Medieval settlement you can find there. Following the path between the medieval settlement and some hut circles you head down the hill and across the bottom towards Black Hill and Smallacombe Rocks.

Crossing Black Down, you head towards Yarner Woods and the East Dartmoor Nature reserve. Skirting around the Nature reserve and Yarner Woods you pick up Hound Tor Ridge and Woods, following the river upstream towards and past Becky Falls.

After Becky Falls you pick up a path on your left that leads you towards Hayne Down, which you pass over onto Cripdon Down which leads you to the famous Jay's Grave.

From Jay's Grave you follow the path towards Hamledown Tor, where you hit the Two Moors Way and join it for a small section on the way to Honeybag Tor. From Honeybag Tor you cross Chinkwell Tor and Bell Tor before coming out on Bonehill Down, which you head up to reach the finish line for your bespoke medal, technical t-shirt and a well earned rest!

Any marathon on Dartmoor is not for the faint-hearted and this marathon is no different.

Set in the heart of Dartmoor at Holwell Down, you take in a lovely and challenge circuit of the surrounding areas of the moors.

Heading from the start down towards Holwell Lawn and the Hounder Down, it won't be long until you find your first small climb, taking you between some medieval ruins and some stone circles before you drop down and onto the other side of the valley arriving on Haytor Down.

Cutting across the side of Haytor Down you'll come to a climb that takes you towards Yarner Woods and some very important nature reserves. Skirting Yarner Woods you then pick up the trail leading towards the River Bovey and Hisley Wood.

The truly stunning section takes you up the river past the famous Becky Falls and all the way to Manaton. At Manaton you turn North and head towards Luckdon which is at the foot of Easdon Down and Tor, which you'll head up and over on the way to Vogwell Down.

From here you will head out across Heatree Down towards Natsworthy Manor. Here you'll then be back into some woods leading you to Lower Hookner and then West Coombe.

From here you head on to one of the nicest sections of the course: starting at the bottom of Coombe Down you head up and over the Down between Kings Tor and Shapley Tor, where you'll come up to Hookney Tor and join the Two Moors Way for a very small section.

Heading around Hockney and Hammeldown Tor, you'll come down through Challacombe Down before heading to the edge of Soussons Down, where you then start making your way home and back to Hemel Down overlooking Widecombe-in-the-Moor. From here it's through Widecombe and up Bonehill down to the finish where refreshments and your well earned medal and techincal t-shirt will be waiting for you!
